So much of the process behind successful work is hidden, and that gap between what we see and what actually happened is worth paying attention to. When lecturing, one of our coaches used to open the folder of drafts sitting behind a single published paper and show it to students. He wasn’t even first author on it. Inside that folder was rewrite after rewrite, pages of comments from three reviewers, another full round of work with six authors, then three more rounds of reviews listing what still needed fixing.

Students look at a finished paper and assume someone simply sat down and wrote it. It reads as one clean effort, when really it was months of criticism, revision and more criticism.

Why the hidden process matters

It’s the same pattern as the polished photo on social media. You see the finished version and none of the retakes, edits or discarded attempts that came before it. If you only ever see the outcome, it’s easy to assume the people who produced it found it easy, or got it right first time, and to measure your own messy first drafts against their tidy final ones.

This is part of why we put together our Before & After Transformation Blueprint, because seeing what actually sits behind a result changes how you judge your own progress. The process behind successful work is rarely as smooth as the finished version suggests, and knowing that can make the rewrites and criticism feel less like proof you’re failing and more like the ordinary, unglamorous shape of getting somewhere.

If you’d like support working through your own version of that process, our coaches are happy to talk it through with you.
